6 foods that may surprise you…fizzy drinks and coffee shops

Writer: Yoganic - NutritionYoganic - Nutrition

As a Nutritionist, people often ask me about particular foods when trying to lose weight, or what they should be feeding their children.

So over the coming days I’ll be sharing with you 6 different foods that may surprise you, common things families buy and consume which may be worth thinking about…

Fizzy drinks and coffee shops

If you struggle with your weight this is a key area to look at. Whichever fizzy drink option you choose it’s either going to be high in sugar, or sweeteners, with or without caffeine. That large coffee with an extra shot and a pump of syrup you had on your way to work this morning also contains the same - caffeine and sugar (even if you didn’t physically add any sugar).

Next time you reach for a fizzy drink or fancy a shop-bought coffee:

  • Try to think about why you’ve chosen it (early morning pick-me-up, or mid afternoon lull? Or craving something sweet?)

  • Drink it and see how you feel (probably a little more energised and awake?)

  • Pay attention to how you feel an hour or two later (tired or irritable?)

  • Notice if you then want something else that contains sugar or caffeine to stave off the hunger and fatigue…and so it continues throughout the day

Remember - just because it’s a liquid, doesn’t mean it doesn’t count!

Here’s a good example from a well-known high street coffee store with express stations in many local convenience stores:

A large vanilla latte – the calorie content doesn’t look too bad (184 kcal), however the sugar content is 20g. That’s 5 teaspoons of sugar, and as a woman 2/3 of your entire daily intake in 1 drink!

Think a large latte or chai latte would fair any better? 19.7g and 22.8g respectively. Add a flavour and it’s another teaspoon of sugar.

Maybe select a regular next time, or a cup of tea!

If you’re unsure what to eat or what to feed your family, struggling with your weight or constantly fatigued then get in touch. Together we can create a tailored nutrition plan that works for you.
